SI. 1st Trimester Scanning

firstScan Clinics at Window to the Womb provide early pregnancy scans just 6 weeks gestation – 14 weeks + 6 days based on Last Menstrual Cycle dates (LMP) or two weeks following a positive test if dates are unknown.

The client is able to book their appointment online or over the phone and will be asked a series of questions to ensure they are attending at the correct gestation and to obtain reasons for needing the scan.

It is important to note that:

  • We do not mix our firstScan clinics with our 15 weeks+ clinics.
  • We do not confirm gender during our firstScan clinics.
  • As per NICE guidelines the client will be advised to have a trans-vaginal scan if presenting pre 10 weeks gestation. (See Window to the Womb protocol document).
  • We do not use pulsed wave doppler on our Early Pregnancy scans.
  • We do not measure fetal heart rate on M-Mode.

During this module you will watch a series video examples of the following:

  • Best practice when scanning in the 1st Trimester.
  • Five potential outcomes of an early pregnancy scan.
  • Normal anatomy in early pregnancy.
  • Best practice when scanning trans-abdominally at 10 weeks.

Prior to the scan the client will be asked to complete a pre-scan questionaire asking them to complete a number of questions regarding their personal circumstances. This includes information about this pregnancy and any previous pregnancies that will be useful to you when conducting the scan.

Regardless of scan outcome the customer will be provided with an early pregnancy obstetric report to add to their maternity notes with your findings. (Examples will be provided later in the course).
