When conducting a referral it is important to ensure the client’s appointment is made with the correct department. Whilst trusts can vary, it is important to try to follow the following guidance where possible when conducting a referral.
In most cases referral is to the Early Pregnancy Unit. This will need to made when the EPU is open and please refer to the referral pathways for opening times.
The exception is: If the baby is alive but has an obvious abnormality and requires a fetal medicine specialist opinion, the referral must be Monday – Friday between 9am – 4pm.
16-20 weeks when the baby has no FH some hospitals will request referral to their EPU and some to the labour suite or maternity triage. Please refer to the referral pathways for advice and opening times. The client must be allowed to go home fully informed and with advice about when the referral can be made.

If there is a fetal abnormality detected then the client should be referred to the fetal medicine unit or antenatal clinic as per their hospital. This referral must be made Monday to Friday and between the hours of 9am and 4pm.
It is important to tell the client when the referral will be made. She does not need to remain in the clinic while referral made but must be made aware when the next clinic at the hospital is open for the referral to be made.
It is important that the referral process is explained, and the client should NOT be told to call/see their midwife or go to the emergency department.
