CP2 What makes an ideal chaperone?

An ideal chaperone will:

  • be sensitive and respectful to the client’s dignity and confidentiality.
  • be prepared to reassure the client if they show signs of distress or discomfort.
  • be familiar with the procedure involved, especially in an intimate examination.
  • be prepared to raise concerns about a sonographer or scan assistant if misconduct occurs.

Chaperones should be clear about their role and responsibilities. It is important that chaperones should place themselves inside any screened-off area or room as opposed to outside (if they remain outside, then they are not technically chaperoning).
