CP2 What is valid consent?

  • Clients have the right to be fully involved in decisions about their care. It is therefore essential to provide them with adequate information.
  • Consent involves obtaining the clients permission to proceed.
  • However, for consent to be valid, it must be given voluntarily by an appropriately informed person who has the capacity to consent to the examination in question.
  • The client or where relevant, someone with parental responsibility, must give consent.
  • If a client agrees to a procedure without or with limited knowledge of what the scan involves, then it is not considered informed consent and will be invalid.
  • Additional considerations have to be made in relation to consenting young people (16 & 17 year olds) and adults who lack mental capacity.
