Clients have the right to be fully involved in decisions about their care. It is therefore essential to provide them with adequate information.
Consent involves obtaining the clients permission to proceed.
However, for consent to be valid, it must be given voluntarily by an appropriately informed person who has the capacity to consent to the examination in question.
The client or where relevant, someone with parental responsibility, must give consent.
If a client agrees to a procedure without or with limited knowledge of what the scan involves, then it is not considered informed consent and will be invalid.
Additional considerations have to be made in relation to consenting young people (16 & 17 year olds) and adults who lack mental capacity.
