If you have to give the woman news which is likely to be difficult, distressing or unexpected, consider using a short opening phrase such as:


Provide information about next steps including:

  • If they need to see another health professional, explain why they need to see them and how the referral will work.
  • What might happen in the meantime?
  • Whom to contact if she needs help or information before then?

It may be difficult, and possibly inappropriate, to try to end on a positive note when a woman is experiencing a miscarriage but it’s good to summarise briefly what you have discussed and ask if she has any questions.
