This is another important section so make sure you have your notepad ready.
When the scan confirms viability
Sonographer
- The sonographer should tell the client the good news as soon as the heartbeat can be seen and offer to show the woman and guests the TV screen. The sonographer must be positive, reassuring and ensure the woman has seen the heartbeat (or a pregnancy with a yolk sac seen in the uterus).
- The sonographer should tell the woman that we will print a photograph for her.
- The sonographer should complete measurements and tell the client her gestation based on them.
- The sonographer should complete and print off the scan report.
Chaperone
- The chaperone should ensure the client has understood the good news and (where appropriate) congratulate the client and her family.
- When instructed by the sonographer the chaperone should ensure the TV screen is on and can be clearly seen.
Next steps after scan completed
- The chaperone should escort the client and her family to the waiting room / print area whilst we prepare her image and report folder.
- Once printed and signed by the sonographer the chaperone should add the scan report to the folder.
- The chaperone should print the photograph and present it in the woman’s scan report folder.
- The chaperone should then discuss the timings of future scans at the antenatal clinic (this will normally be at 12-13 weeks or 20-21 weeks). If the woman asks about another scan at firstScan or Window to the Womb the chaperone should offer available packages.
- If the woman has had recurrent miscarriages a follow-up scan at 10 week scans should be advised and arranged if requested.
- If any of the women ask for more frequent scans then the chaperone should book as they request (although there should be a minimum interval of one week per scan)
- The chaperone should take the opportunity to discuss the Window to the Womb services available after 16 weeks.
- All team member should remain positive with the woman – this is exciting news. Check everything has been great with the service we have provided and wish the client well as she leaves.
