Clinic Team Roles
firstScan clinics initially require three scan assistants and one sonographer just the same as Window to the Womb. Once the service is established and the team are confident, the manager may choose to operate firstScan clinics with two scan assistants on quieter session.
The first scan assistant role will be the front of house/receptionist. This individual will:
- Meet and greet the mothers and make sure all the relevant documentation is completed.
- Make sure that the woman understands what is going to happen next and make sure she is suitable for the scan.
- Take the balance of the scan payment before the appointment.
The other scan assistants will take it in turns to be present in the scan with the sonographer and act as a formal chaperone:
- Make sure that the woman is comfortable and understands at all times what is going on.
- Complete the forms and be responsible for making relevant referrals if needed.
- Printing the photo for the woman.
- In the case of a non-viable pregnancy; stay with the woman to provide continuous care and take her to the quiet room (if available). If there is a quiet room the rolling scan assistant can now take the next client into the scan room to continue the diary.
Clinic presentation
The clinic as said previously, will be decorated tastefully; nothing offensive to the woman should be present:
- Heartbeat bears etc removed and leaflets put in place.
- A limited amount of scan pictures can be on the wall but the quiet room should have none present.
- Large TV’s in the scan room will be off when the woman enters the room and will be switched on by the scan assistant only when instructed by the sonographer.
Consumables
Before the start of any clinic, it is the responsibility of the entire team to ensure the equipment is turned on and ready. All stock including scan gel, cleaning products and protective covers should be checked to ensure a sufficient quantity to complete the session.
