SI. Completing a Report – 1st Trimester

HCPC Standard of Proficiency: Understand the importance of and be able to obtain informed consent.
Example: Scans conducted between 9.5 – 11 weeks where an apparent increase in nuchal oedema is seen.

HCPC sets out the role of standards of conduct performance and ethics including what the public should expect from a health care professional. These standards are necessary to protect the public.
Key standards include the following:

• Know the limits of their practice and when to seek advice or refer to another professional.
• Understand the need to act in the best interest of the service users at all times. (Duty of care).

Prior to any 1st Trimester scan you must ascertain all relevant information prior to commencing the scan especially if the patient has had a previous scan for the current pregnancy. It is beneficial if you can obtain the previous report where possible and a scan must not be performed if less than two weeks since the previous scan.

It is important to note that all our reports completed within the 1st Trimester are templated for consistency and to maintain national standards to ensure that the products, services and systems are safe, consistent and reliable.

In cases of fetal demise measurements should be performed as follows:

• 8 – 11 weeks by CRL.
• 11 – 13 weeks by CRL however may include FL or HC.
• 13 – 16 weeks by FL + HC.
• 16 weeks+ by HC + FL.
