Window to the Womb guidelines are produced from NICE, RCOG, ISUOG and peer reviewed articles.

HCPC Standard of Proficiency: Being able to distinguish between normal and abnormal appearances evident on images.

HCPC sets out the role of standards of conduct performance and ethics including what the public should expect from a health care professional. These standards are necessary to protect the public.
Key standards include the following:

  • Know the limits of their practice and when to seek advice or refer to another professional.
  • Understand the need to act in the best interest of the service users at all times. (Duty of care).

The finding of an abnormal ultrasound appearance from that expected in Window to the Womb Well-being checks should be discussed with the customer promptly without extended scanning times attempting to acquire a full diagnosis.
One abnormal finding is sufficient to make a referral. Providing that initial findings are fully explained with honesty and within the limits of your role, it should reduce added distress whilst awaiting any referral which inevitably will not be immediate.

When completing the Well-being form at Window to the Womb, the ticking of ‘View Restricted’ requires either a reason or an explanation for the atypical appearance in the sonographer notes box. It is important to also note in the sonographer comments if a referral is made and the nature of the referral. (See example in material tab).

Please note that Window to the Womb do not provide personalised GROW charts within two weeks of a previous growth check and do not provide second opinions on any findings of an NHS scan.
